Project Leaders React to Inclusion of Tonko-backed Community Projects in Federal Budget

Following Congressman Paul D. Tonko's announcement of 10 Capital Region Community Projects included in the federal budget, project and community leaders celebrated the transformational funding and commended the Congressman for championing these local projects. The package is expected to be advanced and signed into law this week.

Municipal Floating Solar Demonstration Project (awarded $3,000,000)
Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler: "This Federal support for our plan to put 8,000 solar arrays on our water reservoir is essential to making our first-of-its-kind in the nation project a reality. The Floating Solar project will be transformational for Cohoes and the region, generating both clean energy and economic savings. It would not be possible without Congressman Tonko's expert guidance and enthusiastic commitment to our novel idea. As a long-time advocate for clean energy and environmental justice, he immediately understood the potential impact of our vision when we brought the Floating Solar idea to him in 2020. He and his team have guided and supported us every step of the way."

Multimodal Station Phase I - Pedestrian Connector and Station Design (awarded $3,000,000) and Community Center Project (awarded $2,000,000)
Amsterdam Mayor Mike Cinquanti credited the Congressman's efforts to secure the funding for the two projects in his City's rebuilding downtown core as being transformational. "Both the new downtown centers and the multimodal transportation center projects, which are receiving funding in this bill are essential components to our strategy to build upon Amsterdam's growing popularity among Capital District residents as both a recreational and entertainment destination."

Westerlo Broadband Expansion (awarded $1,687,500)
Town of Westerlo Supervisor Matthew Kryzak: "I would like to thank Congressman Tonko and his staff for all of their hard work and due diligence in securing the much needed funding to provide broadband access to our rural community. The opportunities created by broadband access will have a profound impact on education, employment, and the overall quality of life within our community."

University at Albany, Albany, NY for purchase of equipment (awarded $1,000,000)
UAlbany President Havidán Rodríguez: "We're grateful for Congressman Tonko's strong support of the RNA Institute's interdisciplinary work to improve our ability to diagnose and treat RNA diseases. This grant will fund advanced technology that will empower UAlbany researchers to better track, understand, and fight diseases like COVID-19 and myotonic dystrophy -- work that will benefit all New Yorkers as well as people across the globe."

Town of Rotterdam for Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements Project (awarded $960,000)
Rotterdam Supervisor Mollie Collins: "The Town of Rotterdam is grateful for the efforts of Congressman Tonko to secure this vital funding for our wastewater treatment plant improvements. This financial commitment is vital to address our aging infrastructure issues and delivers much need support for our residents as well as providing for future economic development opportunities."

City of Mechanicville for Water Reliability Project (awarded $800,000)
"The City of Mechanicville wishes to thank Congressman Tonko for his efforts that has allowed the City to be awarded a $800,000 grant to address the City's water infrastructure. The funds will allow the City to continue in its quest to replace many of the aging water lines that currently exist throughout the City's water system."

Urban Grow Center Expansion (awarded $750,000)
"Capital Roots is so thankful to Congressman Tonko for securing critical funding to assist our expanded food access programs. Our leaders are investing in True Food Security and helping to build a healthier, more equitable Capital Region that delivers dignified food access for all our residents."

Schenectady Family Health Services, Inc., D/B/A Hometown Health Centers, Schenectady, NY for facilities and equipment (awarded $750,000)
Joe Gambino, CEO at Hometown Health Centers: "We are so fortunate to have a representative like Congressman Paul Tonko who truly understands the importance of improving the health of children and adults who live in an underserved community. 100% of this money will be used to build a state-of-the-art dental facility that the whole Capital Region will be proud of."

Sheriff's Homeless Improvement Program (awarded $500,000)
Albany Sheriff Craig Apple: "These funds will allow us to expand our program and connect more individuals with housing and services in an effort to eliminate homelessness and promote opportunities within Albany County."
